Double Impella Miracle

December 10, 2018 By Allison Carter

When Adam Millar caught what seemed to be a “cold” he couldn’t shake, little did everyone know that his heart was actually in failure. As a junior hockey player with goals of a professional career, Adam never expected to end up in the ICU with cardiogenic shock and severe heart failure. A double Impella® device was placed by Dr Nima Aghili, one to the left ventricle and one to the right ventricle. The Impella®  device is used temporarily to add support to the heart in those with compromised function. Within hours, Adam started to turn the corner and after the first week in ICU, both pumps were removed and his heart recovered. Since this time, Adam is back on the ice with normal heart function.
